Church is the people of God, gathered in the name of Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus spoke about church, he did not describe a location or an institution. He spoke about a people he would build. The word translated “church” in the New Testament is ekklesia, which simply means a “called-out assembly.” Wherever believers gather in Jesus’ name, the church is present.
Jesus promised that where two or three gather in his name, he is present among them. That promise applies in sanctuaries and cathedrals, and it applies just as fully in living rooms, around kitchen tables, in parks, or wherever believers meet.
